Say, WHAT? It’s back-to-school time! How did that happen?
The weather is still warm, but there’s a little taste of fall – it’s getting dark earlier, some of the trees are showing a little color, and the MN State Fair is in full swing – all signs of summer’s end.
When you’re getting your wardrobe set for the season change, retailers would like you to purchase a whole new fall wardrobe. It’s tempting, right? But consider this: there are likely many items you already own that can be paired in new ways to create outfits that feel new and contemporary to fit the fall trends.
Even if you aren’t going back to school, this is a great time to lay fresh eyes on your wardrobe. You can shop your own closet for outfit combos that maximize what you already own.
And when you do shop, embrace the #SecondhandSeptember movement and shop only new-to-you. Secondhand fashion is a go-to option for stylish, sustainable, and budget-friendly outfits.
Fall 2024 top trends in secondhand style
- Vintage Denim: Classic denim never goes out of style, and this year, vintage jeans, jackets, and skirts are making a strong comeback. Look for high-waisted mom jeans, distressed denim, and oversized jackets that add a retro flair to any outfit.
- Oversized Blazers: Perfect for layering, oversized blazers add a polished touch to any outfit. Pair them with jeans for a casual look or with a skirt for something more sophisticated.
- Eco-Friendly Accessories: Sustainable fashion isn’t just about clothing—accessories like secondhand backpacks, belts, and jewelry are also super in. Students especially are looking for unique, eco-friendly pieces that help reduce their carbon footprint.
- Athleisure: Look for branded leggings, sweatshirts, and sneakers that combine style with comfort. Local shops like Elite Repeat, Nu Look, and Fashion Avenue regularly carry high quality secondhand athleisure, and you can find it online at sites like ThredUP.
- Boho Chic: Flowing skirts, embroidered tops, and layered jewelry are part of the boho chic trend. These pieces are perfect for expressing your individuality.
- Layering Essentials: Cardigans, vests, and light sweaters are perfect for layering as the seasons change. These items can be spendy new – shopping secondhand allows you to experiment with different styles without breaking the bank.
- Sustainable Footwear: Secondhand footwear is often overlooked and is amazing in value. Almost all of my shoes are new-to-me, including designer boots, retro sneakers, and classic loafers and flats.
- Mix and Match Prints: Don’t be afraid to combine prints and patterns for a fun, confident look. Consignment shops offer so many choices, making it easy to find unique combinations that stand out.
Shopping secondhand for your “back-to-school” shopping doesn’t have to be a chore. Most importantly, it’s an eco-friendly approach to your wardrobe, but it also allows you to curate a personal style that’s both fabulous and budget-friendly.
